The year that was 2021, which was expected to be endowed with unadulterated joy, is going to culminate with words that it has turned out to be yet another tumultuous year as our perilous, onerous and gruelling fight against our invincible and biggest nemesis of all - COVID-19 - persists.
COVID-19 literally took the gilt of the gingerbread this year, leaving a hefty price tag for humans and taking its toll on every nook and cranny of the world as hundreds of thousands of people fell victim to it.
As the title suggests, 2021 is an eventful year, marred by the Capitol insurrection at the outset, the assassination of the Haitian President, the world entering uncharted waters thanks to the Delta and Omicron mutant strains and a spate of gun violence in the United States by dint of racial bigotry and malaise coming in concomitant with a public health disaster that's expected to last for a few more years.
Despite having gone whole hog in our quest to jettison COVID, it's of no avail as a new and more contagious variant of the communicable COVID-19 virus emerged. And Omicron is still on the prowl, with unvaccinated people having a front-row seat to it.
Not to be outdone, we, humans, have been trying to outfox COVID by imposing strict anti-virus measures that we are all adhering to. Nevertheless, it is by no means a highly remunerative job and we seem to be out of our depth.
Be that as it may, at our apogee, Hong Kong managed to prevent local infections for at least a month, ensuring the return of normalcy. As such, we certainly got to enjoy Christmas to our heart's content.
On the whole, health authorities across the globe are contemplating more anti-virus measures that are expected to go a long way towards keeping COVID at bay, as time is of the essence.
Suffice it to say, these days may make you bereft of hope, but it does behoove you to avoid being lackadaisical in our quest to extirpate COVID as inexhaustible perseverance makes for a perfect milieu conducive to success.
