Saving Koalas from the precipice of extinction

Australians are going through a rocky patch in their quest to avert that ominous eventuality: Koalas no more.

Emblematic of Australia, koalas are considered precious by Australian and visitors alike.

Following years of putting the seemingly unimportant issue on the back burner, Australia is finally declaring a state of emergency in the koala world.

However, does this new status bring a much-needed change to the fact koalas are teetering on the verge of extinction? According to a New York Times article entitled "Australia Declares Koalas an Endangered Species", the answer is no. Although the Australian government has seen the light, various pressing issues like deforestation, which literally robs koalas of a cosy living environment, have been left untouched. Provided that the most pressing issues are neglected, isn't it ludicrous koalas will be saved regardless?

What's more, the New York Times quoted a source as saying, koalas perished by the score -- over 60,000 in all -- when wildfires coursed through forests in Australia back in 2019. Now, both the Australian government and animal conservationists are fighting to count the number of living koalas and save them from danger.

By way of efforts to learn more about the health of koalas, not only can Australians get a handle on why the number is dwindling, but they can also play it by ear -- in light of wildfires, they can keep koalas in places away from the fires to ensure the tragedy back in 2019 never happens again -- killing two birds with one stone.

While all this may be silver bullets to the imminent problem of koalas becoming extinct, it is humans who have the biggest say in when to provide a security blanket for koalas.
